The most striking change compared to how this looks today is the width of the sidewalks. Sidewalks were narrowed all throughout Manhattan (with architectural features such as stoops and gardens removed) so that fully grown adults could weave and bob around in giant metal boxes while making honking noises.

Why did we stop with the big window shades? My guess is that it’s because it was that was for keeping cool and now we have a/c?
