This entire block has sat vacant since the 1990’s, when a collection of 19th century theaters and commercial buildings along Monroe Avenue (bottom left of the pic) were [demolished to make way for surface parking](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monroe_Avenue_Commercial_Buildings).

This the [view from Google Maps](https://www.google.com/maps/@42.3319975,-83.0465252,280m/data=!3m1!1e3) of the glaring hole in the heart of downtown.

After several decades of abandonment and emptiness, the site/block is now being redeveloped into [an office and residential high-rise complex](https://detroit.curbed.com/2018/12/13/18135079/monroe-blocks-development-groundbreaking-downtown-detroit).
