Built in 1888, the Italian, Romanesque style hotel was one of Detroit’s more luxurious and successful lodgings. The hotel was a six story structure built on the corner of Michigan and Shelby in 1888 and later by 1891, the structure was expanded and replaced the neighboring Antisidel House Hotel. Despite its sucess however the hotel wouldn’t last for very long. By the turn of the century, Washington Boulevard was changing into a luxury shopping district and by the 1910’s the hotel was competing with the more modern Statler, and the Pontiartrain Hotels. In 1918, the hotel was bought by the Book Brothers who ran the hotel until 1923 when it was demolished for the present day Book Cadillac Hotel, a hotel that was (and arguably still is) Detroit’s finest hotel.
