Budapest in the aftermath of WW2 with the collapsed Chain Bridge and heavily damaged Buda Castle in the back. Much of it was thankfully rebuilt, but the city today only possesses a fraction of the beauty it once held.

I visited Budapest around a month ago and I really fell in love with it. It’s such a shame thst the original city was not preserved

Wow, I’ve also seen some horrible pictures showing the destruction of Danzig (now Gdańsk), Breslau (now Wrocław), and Warsaw. Bad times.

I visited Budapest a year ago and it was beautiful, I can’t imagine how it must have looked before

This may be urban legend but when I was in Budapest, I was told that Hitler spared two cities from the worst of the shelling because he loved their beauty, Paris and Budapest. Even so, swaths of historic buildings were lost. I love this picture.

Edit: See replies below for information about how incorrect this is, my bad. Factcheck your walking tour guides, folks!

Must be a pretty big fraction. Budapest is among the best preserved large cities in Europe.
