From the hills to the left, the palace does look more like a castle. There are still some huge crenellated fortifications including a massive medieval round tower gate.

Budapest was one of the most surprising places I’ve been! Such a great city. It feels like it’s still on that ‘upcurve’ of up-and-coming travel destinations for Western tourists such as myself. I didn’t know much about the city before I went, and had it tacked on to a different trip in which I was seeing Prague and Vienna as well. But it turned out to be my favorite city of the three!
The June weather was really great, the people are very kind, and the architecture and history are absolutely stunning. You could easily spend a day in the castle district pictured in the OP link and not get bored. There’s tons of great stuff to see there—Fisherman’s Bastion, Matthias Church, etc. And perhaps best of all, the food in Budapest is really good and it’s absurdly cheap! I ate with 4 other people and it came out to the equivalent of about €50 for great food and Hungarian beer.
Also, somewhat unrelated to the photo in the OP, but the Hungarian Parliament building (on the other side of the river) is one of the single most beautiful places I’ve ever been. If anyone visits Budapest I highly recommend it. A stunning place.
I shot a bit of video while I was there, if anyone is interested in seeing, briefly, what the Castle district is like, I included it in this video.
Thanks for sharing, OP. I loved Budapest.
