There are hundreds of mosques with this kind of dome but the ‘domes coming out of domes’ design we see with the Blue Mosque was actually reserved exclusively for the Ottoman Sultan. No one else was allowed to build them. So naturally, that’s exactly what people did when they were trying to break away from the Ottoman Empire, because it showed that they were equal to the Sultan. For example, the Muhammad Ali Mosque in Cairo was basically Muhammad Ali’s way of saying ‘fuck your rules, I’m just as great as you’.
