Babocsay Villa, Budapest, Hungary, designed by Aladár Árkay in 1906. The owner was not happy with its unusual regional art nouveau style; in 1932 he hired another architect to remodel it in a more modern fashion.

So sad. Art Nouveau is one of my favourite architecture movements, and there are already too few examples of it around the world. This had some Gaudì feel to it, too bad it was remodeled 🙁

I’m aware this may sound disparaging, but I truly don’t mean it to be:

This original facade reminds me of carnival 🎠 carousels and steam calliopes.

It’s an extravagant, richly decorated look, like a wedding cake.

I adore it! It just makes me wonder if those old carnival entertainments had been designed by Hungarians.

Not gunna lie: as much as I love weird buildings and absolutely adore nouveau, this is an inharmonious mess. It feels like it’s trying to be three different styles at once.

Looks like a fun house you’d find at a carnival.
