In this case the war has nothing to do with the loss; the old station was torn down and replaced by a larger one because it had become too small in the face of the ever-growing railway traffic in Rome.
It’s nice to arrive in Rome seeing the shittiness of Termini only to walk a minute outside the station and see the baths of Diocletian. Nice juxtaposition, makes you appreciate the history more.
