An example of how things change. The first house was built in 1866, torn down in 1892 for the second house which was torn down in 1920 for industry. Now an empty lot. Fort street at Swain and Vineyard, Detroit.

The amount of amazing architecture this world has lost over time is depressing to think about.

I just want to point out that the two houses while different styles still pulled from the same way that humans designed structures for hundreds of years. Beginning in the early 20th century these traditional elements started to fade away. After WWII, is when the cat got out of the bag and traditional elements went out the window and frankly still to do this day.

I think that’s one reason why this stuff is important to keep because most new stuff is crap. Occasionally something good comes along.

The amount of lost architecture in Detroit alone is heartbreaking. My dad used to drive me around to look at all the old houses when we visited family as a kid. So sad to think about all the amazing houses gone or rotting.

What foes “torn down for industry” mean? Honest question.

I see detroit on this sub so often, it makes me so sad.

I remember in high school I’d walk around a bit, looking at all the old houses that were torn to shreds. They were beautiful to look at even then. Now they’re either gone entirely or replaced with boring buildings.

The two houses look like the same one.
