There’s another side of this story. All the old buildings here in Gozo are made of this beautiful golden limestone (well this picture is not the best example) Inside the apartments you’ll have those raw walls that make you feel like living in a castle.
Until recently, to keep this beautiful, traditional scenery they were only able build up to 3 storeys. However times change and money rule now, the gov agreed to go up to 4 levels and as a result you see those monstrosities. They’re destroying all those old buildings adding 4th level made of grey brick as it’s cheaper and you’re not allowed to use the limestone for anything else than a facade (limestone quarries destroying land)

Oddly, there is a subway in a nearby town that has this fake facade effect. The window on the far right is basically useless. It trips me out every time I drive past it. Edit: Here’s another angle
